Moms spend so much time, energy, and effort giving of themselves. And in order to give so much to others, we have to be building ourselves up too.
It’s essential to take breaks, rest up, take proper care of ourselves, and do intentional things to bring ourselves joy, (which can be small & simple things that don’t interfere with our responsibilities.)
If we don’t take time to do these things as moms, we will crash and burn eventually.
If you think about a secular job, there are laws in place that provide breaks for employees after they work for a certain period of time.
The reason for these breaks is not so the employees can be irresponsible and never come back to work.
The purpose is to allow the employee to rest up, take care of themselves, and get a break. And the result is the workers can actually fulfill their responsibilities better, because they are not getting burned out.
An employee that is not overworked is way more likely to find joy in their job and be more productive while they work.
So the same principle applies for moms. We are doing so much taking care of our kids and home. And if we don’t get needed breaks and rest, we will lack joy and energy with our workload, (which can also spill over into a job outside of mom responsibilities too.)
So those are 3 reasons why moms should take time for themselves.
Below are some resources that can help you get started with self care.
A friend told me about this author a couple of years ago, and I am so glad I listened to her recommendation and read her book.
Not only did applying the skills in this book majorly help my marriage, but it also talks about taking time for self-care, and tips for choosing and implementing meaningful self-care. Reading her book was the first time I was convinced to seriously start practicing self-care.
This post discusses different ways to practice self-care as a mom– both some basic ways and things that are relaxing & fun.
These resources will get you started on using self-care in simple ways.
