So last time I went grocery shopping, I had purchased a bag of lemons. They weren’t on my list, but I had a strong desire to use them. And today just happened to be really hot, so I thought this would be an excellent day to make lemonade.
On top of the perfect physical circumstances I had to make lemonade, I thought that figuratively it made sense as well. You know that old adage- ‘When life gives you lemons..’ While life hasn’t literally given me lemons- I did have to buy them- I do feel that lately we’ve had to deal with lemon-like problems, so.. lemonade.. here I come!

But seriously, just to give some examples of some of the craziness we’ve been dealing with.. a few weeks back, the night we returned from an out-of-town trip for a family funeral, (which is already not the best start to a story..,) we arrived home to a broken joist in our ceiling. Now this is sort of an important piece of wood you want in tact, because it helps support the floor our bedroom is on. And to fix it meant there was an ugly hole in our living room ceiling.
The very next day we received a notice from the city stating we had a leak in our water line and had 24 hours to get it fixed. (No stress there..) Well, apparently they DO give you longer get it fixed, but that is NOT how they word it on the notice they leave, because they evidently wanted us to have a heart attack.
So long story short, we did get the water line fixed, which isn’t cheap by the way, so I hope you never go through that, or at least have home insurance that covers it, but our ceiling is still being worked on.
That’s not even the craziest stuff that’s happened to us lately. But enough about craziness… We made lemonade, it’s great, and we will peacefully enjoy it 🙂
I refuse to believe that summer will be over soon, so as far as I’m concerned, it’s still going to be summer for awhile and we will have lots of lemonade days to come. 🙂
This recipe only takes a few minutes to make and it’s fresh. And it’s a 3 ingredient recipe! You can’t get much better than that!
Note: You will need a pitcher that holds at least 8 cups of liquid (such as this one) to make this.
Prep Time: 10 mins (or less) Yields: About 7 cups of lemonade
3/4 cup cane or white sugar (we used cane)
1/2 cup + 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice (about 3-5 lemons- I used 3 large lemons)
6 cups cold water
1.) Squeeze lemon juice out of fresh lemons until you have 1/2 cup plus 1 Tbsp of juice (this is equivalent to 9 Tablespoons total.)
2.) Pour lemon juice, sugar, and water in a pitcher that holds at least 8 cups of liquid, and stir until sugar is dissolved.
3.) Serve in glasses over ice, if desired. Store in the refrigerator tightly covered for up to 3 days. (It may last longer than that but that is the longest I will recommend with a certainty.)
People vary in their tastes for what they like for a lemon juice to sugar ratio, so you can always add more or put in less of one of these to begin with, and adjust to your personal tangy/sweet preferences.
